Martin: “A Lannister Always Pays His Student Loan Debts”

EVANSTON – Last week, Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin visited Northwestern with some advice for students. The event was hosted by Medill School of Journalism, of which Martin is an alum.

“A Lannister always pays his student loan debts,” Martin remarked to the crowd. “The man who passes the sentence should personally hand back the graded papers. When you play the game of hooking up, you win or you die.”

Martin’s speech lasted approximately 15 minutes, with which he imparted words of wisdom such as “It’s the family name that lives on the building you donate. It’s all that lives on.” He remarked as an aside, “The Ryans send their regards.”

When questioned about whether his entire speech was thinly veiled adaptations of Game of Thrones quotes, Martin replied, “You know nothing, student. Winter Quarter is coming.”
