Northwestern Fight Song to Become Enlightened Disagreement Song

In the latest of many efforts to foster open discourse on campus, Northwestern announced today that its beloved football fight song is to be rechristened the Enlightened Disagreement Song.

In keeping with its new title, the song has been almost entirely rewritten to better represent the values of the university—many new verses incorporate conflict resolution frameworks and intermissions for box breathing; and the overall runtime has been extended to 47 minutes, owing in large part to the inclusion of a full-length video course on bystander intervention training.

“This is a huge step for us,” said a spokesperson for the university. “We’re really hoping to push our campus culture in a more civil, inclusive direction.” He encourages students to sing the opposing team’s song at the same time to acquire a more balanced perspective.

Recent polls in the Daily indicate that this move has elicited highly polarized reactions from the student body, with 2 percent expressing strong disapproval and the remaining 98 confessing to knowing none of the original lyrics besides “Rah Rah.” Several students wrote to register their displeasure at the “obtrusive” listening circles now held at midfield, where players use “Your touchdown made me feel…” statements to reconcile conflicts.
