Honestly It Shouldn’t Be That Hard to Avoid Eleven Bread for Eight Days
Now I’m not a practicing Jew myself. In fact, I’m not a Jew at all. But, as an occasional Roman Catholic, I’ve tried to follow the teachings of Popes John XXIII, Francis, and most recently Leo XIV, and they said we should be open and respectful to people of other faiths. Now I’ve tried, but man am I finding it hard to sympathize with my Jewish friends around Passover. I mean, how hard is it to avoid eating eleven bread for a week?
First of all, what do they mean when they say “eleven bread”? Eleven pieces of bread? Eleven slices? Eleven baguettes? Does pizza crust count as bread? What if somebody just has one really big piece of bread and they munch on it for week? What then, my brothers of another faith? It just doesn’t make much sense, and if I may, I think they really ought to clarify this before they start going around not eating bread for a week and telling each other what they can and cannot do.
Next, what’s the big deal with bread? It seems like a pretty important food and I don’t get why our Abrahamic god would want them to give it up for a week. What about the whole “give us this day our daily bread” spiel in the Lord’s Prayer? Different religion, I know, but surely there’s some crossover at play here.
That all being said, ten bread should be enough to get somebody through a week. How much bread a day does somebody really eat after all. Maybe 2 or 3. So long as it doesn’t get PASSED-OVER. Hehehehe.
